The TOMATIS® Method is a neurosensory sound training program that is used to facilitate neuroplastic change in motor, linguistic, emotional, and cognitive brain function. Current research shows that the brain is plastic; an adaptable organ that changes in response to experience and stimuli. This program developed by a French Ear, Nose and Throat doctor, Dr. Alfred Tomatis in 1958, is supported by extensive research in supporting cognitive function. This educational therapy is used worldwide and available for children, adults, and seniors. The TOMATIS® Method is an easy-to-use, portable device that trains and stimulates the brain through the ear.

The Tomatis® Method trains the brain to better process and interpret sound, increasing an individual’s ability to comprehend and listen. For instance, the device allows the brain to differentiate between high and low frequencies, concentrate on specific frequencies in a distracting environment, and protect the ear from high volume sounds. Listening involves the active process of understanding and integrating the stimulus received from the ear. Hearing, on the other hand, is simply the passive collection of sound. As one can see, hearing does not equal listening*. It’s as if one can clearly visualize words yet cannot understand their meaning.
Another important structure that helps facilitate cognitive functioning is the auditory nerve. The auditory nerve is critical in transmitting motor and auditory information to the auditory cortex of the brain. The Tomatis® Method promotes connectivity between the right and left hemispheres, which enhances creativity and logic. Moving further inside the brain, the auditory cortex is a highly intricate region that is connected to and influences the following:
- Speech and language
- Motor control and coordination
- Executive functioning
- Emotional regulation
- Memory and Attention
- Sensory Processing
- Vagus Nerve
*It is important to note that the Tomatis® Method does not restore hearing loss caused by structural abnormalities or damage, but improves the individual’s ability to ‘listen.’
Sound Stimuli Utilized
The Tomatis® Method uses auditory stimulation with targeted frequencies, air and bone conduction, and Electronic Gating® (ie. unpredictable alterations in frequency and volume which keeps the individual’s brain in a state of surprise; maintaining the brain’s attention to the stimulus). These individualized parameters are then applied to music and voice, creating a stimulation of the brain that improves the overall quality of listening.
When listening to and comprehending sound, our inner ear utilizes both air and bone conduction. With air conduction, a sound is collected and funneled through the external auditory canal. In bone conduction, sound travels to the inner ear through the bones of the skull and vibrates the cochlear. Sound travels through bone faster than it travels through the air. Bone conduction also maintains the volume of lower frequencies better than air. Because the sound reaches your ears first through bone conduction it allows that brain to better prepare to receive the sound through air conduction. To understand bone conduction try speaking with your ears plugged vs unplugged. You can hear your voice just as well both ways. This is because the sound is being transmitted through bone conduction.
The Tomatis® method utilizes the TalksUp® device. The TalksUp® is a portable sensory stimulation device that reproduces the essential parameters of the Tomatis® Method. The TalksUp® device contains several listening programs. The professional is capable of choosing the program that best matches his/her client’s needs from among these programs. These programs are adapted to most listening-related disorders.
- Initial Assessment with a Certified Tomatis® Consultant
- Loop 1 – Passive phase: listening for 40 to 80 minutes per day for 14 days.
- Break* – 3-6 week active phase utilizing Forbrain®** between loops.
- Loop 2 – Intermediate Assessment. Passive phase: listening for 40 to 80 minutes per day for 14 days.
- Break* – 6-8 week active phase utilizing Forbrain®** between loops.
- Loop 3 – Intermediate Assessment. Passive phase: listening for 40 to 80 minutes for 14 days.
- Final Assessment (8+ weeks post loop 3): Followed by continued breaks and loops as per appropriate.
*Breaks allow time for the brain to adjust and solidify changes and improvements gained throughout the therapy
**The Forbrain® is a device that utilizes bone conduction and enhances specific frequencies to improve the auditory feedback loop. The auditory feedback loop (audio-vocal loop) is the skill of being able to listen to, analyze, correct and self-monitor your own speech, language and vocal quality. The individual wears the headset and speaks into the microphone, the Forbrain® then enhances specific frequencies and uses the bone conductor to increase the individual’s awareness of their own vocal output.
Autism Spectrum Disorder is a developmental disorder that affects an individual’s social communication and interaction, and involves behaviors that are restrictive and repetitive in nature. These symptoms can affect an individual’s and a family’s daily routines down to the small and important moments of connecting and/or expressing affection, changes, and transitions in routines, mealtime interactions and the ability to express wants and needs. Every individual is affected differently and symptoms come in a variety of severities.
This disorder begins typically between birth and 2.5 years of age, though most children are still not identified until after age 4. Autism rates are increasing within our population. In a study completed in 2014 and released in April of 2018, the US Federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated that as many as 1 in 59 children are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. A more recent survey released in November 2018, completed by the 2016 National Survey of Children’s Health, estimated the prevalence at 1 in 40 children. As with all developmental disorders, early identification and intervention are key to receiving the greatest benefits from treatments and therapies for lifelong improved quality of life (remember, it is never too late to make improvements).
At WholeHealth Medical we believe that children and adults with Autism Spectrum disorder are incredible vibrant individuals who deserve to live life to their full potential. We take a functional medicine approach to autism.
According to current research, autism appears to be a combination of genetic and environmental risk factors that affect brain health (as listed below). This means that as we improve the environmental factors affecting the brain and work to stimulate the brain through neuroplastic and conventional therapies we can help decrease the symptoms of autism. While improving overall brain function, it is important to continue to work on neuroplastic (i.e. Tomatis® etc.) and conventional therapies (i.e. PT, OT, Speech, etc) because as the individual who has autism developed they typically have missed or not yet reached key developmental milestones.
What can influence brain function?
- Gut Health: bacterial overgrowth or dysbiosis from infection or overuse of antibiotics, parasites.
- Brain Health: Inflammation from infection or toxins (i.e. heavy metal toxicity, pesticides, chemicals, chronic viral infection etc), poor Glial health, neurotransmitter imbalance, poor sensory integration.
- Diet: Inadequate brain nutrition, food allergies, and intolerances.
- Genetics: a propensity for problems with neurotransmitter balance, detox, and energy pathways.
- Hormones that are out of balance in adults
By looking at the body as a whole we can work on balancing the body and putting it into a state of optimal wellness. Our program aims to take into consideration the genetic factors, treat the environmental factors listed above, improve overall health and incorporate the Tomatis® Method to provide measurable improvement in symptoms and function.
